what is radon?
Radon is an invisible and odorless gas that is formed continuously underground. The gas is radioactive and is formed from natural radioactive substances such as uranium in the bedrock and soil. Areas of granite, shale and slate are common contributers to the development of radon gas.
Radon is harmful because people may inhale the gas, causing the lungs to be affected by radioactive radiation. This may lead to lung cancer. According to the World Health Organization (WHO) radon is the main cause of lung cancer development next to active smoking. It is estimated that radon in homes causes between 6% and 15% of the total number of lung cancer deaths in the world.
